Want to share your results early? Consider a preprint

Preprints let you share your research immediately — boosting visibility, speeding feedback, and protecting your ideas with a time-stamped record.

🔗 Many preprint servers let you link your preprint to the final published article later using a DOI!
⚠️ Always check journal rules first, and be clear that preprints are not peer-reviewed.

Does your target journal charge an APC (Article Processing Charge)? 💸

If yes:
- ✅ Check if your grant can cover it.
- ✅ Check if the library has a Transformative Agreement: [OA Support Spreadsheet](https://www.lib.uwo.ca/scholarship/oasupport.html)
- ✅ Deposit your Accepted Manuscript later (Green OA) at no cost to you
If no:
- 🎯 Hooray! Maybe it's a Diamond OA journal.

✅ Open Access helps boost citations and fulfills grant requirements.
✅ More readers
✅ More citations
✅ Greater impact
✅ More opportunities
✅ More good for the world 🌍

📈 Why Open Access Matters

✅ Open Access (OA) makes your work available to anyone, anywhere — not just to those who can afford expensive journal subscriptions.
🌍 Researchers in every country, community organizations, policymakers, and curious readers can find and use your ideas — without barriers. 📚 Studies show that OA articles are cited more often and read more widely. More readers means more impact — and more opportunities for collaboration, recognition, and real-world influence. 🔎 Open Access also makes it easier for your work to be found through search engines like Google Scholar — boosting visibility without extra effort. 💬 Sharing openly invites conversations and connections you might never have imagined — from journalists, to teachers, to new research partners! ⚡ Plus, Open Access helps fulfill requirements from many research funders and universities, who now expect research to be freely available to the public that supports it.

What's a Preprint?

A preprint is a draft shared before peer review.
✅ Often allowed — but check journal policies first!
✅ Boosts visibility early.
Examples:
- [arXiv](https://arxiv.org)
- [bioRxiv](https://biorxiv.org)
- [SocArXiv](https://osf.io/preprints/socarxiv/)

Which version can I share?

Understanding article versions helps you share legally and maximize access:
- Submitted Manuscript = the version you originally sent to the journal — before peer review.
- Accepted Manuscript (AAM) = the peer-reviewed version that incorporates reviewer comments, but without the journal’s final formatting or branding.
- Version of Record (VoR) = the final published version with the journal's typesetting, layout, and logos — usually the most restricted for sharing.
✅ Many journals allow you to upload the Accepted Manuscript into a repository after an embargo period.
🔍 Use ShareYourPaper.org to quickly check what you’re allowed to share — and even deposit it automatically!
